GRAND FORKS, N.D. ? The University of North Dakota will look to extend its 10-match win-streak with a weekend triangular in St. Peter, Minn. The Fighting Sioux will clash at the net first against the undefeated Gustavus Adolphus at 11 a.m. and will follow-up with a 1 p.m. match with Carleton.
North Dakota (10-0) is on a 10-game win-streak after defeating Minnesota, Crookston in four sets on Thursday evening at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center. The Sioux rolled past the Golden Eagles, 25-14, in the first set. It was a battle in set two, but UND held strong for a 26-24 victory before dropping the third set, 25-13. After being forced into their fifth set four of the season, the Sioux held off the Golden Eagles to take the set, 25-20, and win the match.
The Sioux were led by junior middle hitter Amanda Polzin (Hutchinson, Minn.) who attacked at 34.4 percent (15-for-32) with a season-high 15 kills. Polzin also recorded four total blocks with one block solo. Middle hitter Britta Hanson (Jr., Thompson, N.D.) notched 13 kills ? including the match-winner in set four. She topped the team with a 37.9 (13-for-29) attack percentage and four block solos. Outside hitters Devin Trefz (RFr., Bagley, Minn.) and Annika Smed (Fr., Albert Lea, Minn.) each added seven kills. Junior libero Lindsay Vortherms (Windom, Minn.) tallied 10 kills and junior setter Megan Langseth (Alexandria, Minn.) posted 37 assists.
Gustavus pushed to a 9-0 season record after defeating Bethany Lutheran, Wednesday at home. The Gusties topped the Vikings 25-19, 25-11, and 25-14. Meghan Gehring paced Gustavus with eight kills and six blocks followed by Olivia Warren and Angela Ahrendt (Fy., Shoreview, Minn.) with seven and six kills, respectively. Bridget Burtzel posted 19 assists in just over two sets, while Emily Klein (Sr., Red Wing, Minn.) reached 11 digs. Gustavus' hitting percentage of .293 was the highest percentage since September 27, 2006 when the team hit .315 against Bethel.
The Knights dropped to 3-4 on the season after getting swept by Northwestern College, 3-0, on Wednesday evening in the home opener. Megan La Chapelle (Sr./Eagan, Minn.) paced Carleton with eight kills and added a dozen digs. Other statistical leaders for the Knights included Laura Barsness (Jr./Prior Lake, Minn./Lakeville North) and Katie Stanchak (Sr./Battle Creek, Mich./Lakeview) with 13 and 12 digs respectively. Sophomore Beth Jarrett (Mounds View, Minn./Irondale) had 17 assists.
North Dakota's ten straight victories to start the season is a new record for the program. UND surpassed the previous mark of eight straight on Wednesday evening in front of a record 500 fans at the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center. Only two other teams have ever held a 10-game win streak. Under the helm of Lisa Kissee (1986-92), the Sioux won 10 in a row in 1986 and went a record 15 straight in 1990.
