GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- In its final home game of the season, the University of North Dakota soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Eastern Washington on Sunday afternoon, as the Eagles spoiled UND's senior day celebration.
Seniors Kristi Hestdalen and Juliette Austin played in their last game at Bronson Field. Hestdalen made a total of 10 saves in the contest and Austin recorded one shot for UND.
“Kristi and Juliette chose to be a part of what we're doing here and I think you can really see where we started and where we finished, a lot of that has to do with their dedication, on the field to get better at their craft, but also their dedication off the field to try and bring this team closer together to be a true program instead of a bunch of players on a team,” head coach Matt Kellogg said of the two seniors after the game.
With the loss North Dakota moves to 1-14-1 (0-9-0 Big Sky) on the season and is no longer eligible for the 2014 Big Sky Soccer Tournament. Eastern Washington advances to 8-7-0 (5-4-0 Big Sky) on the year.
The Eagles started the game choosing to play with the wind at their backs, and used it to their advantage with scoring the game's only goal in the 21st minute.
North Dakota held off further Eastern Washington offensive advances and started to create its own opportunities later in the second half. UND took all three of its shots on goal in the last 45 minutes of play, but was unable to break through for the equalizer.
UND finishes the 2014 regular season with a final road game, taking on Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colo., on Friday, Oct. 31.
