VERMILLION, S.D. – After competing at three meets last week, the North Dakota track and field teams sent a limited number of athletes to compete at the USD Early Bird on Saturday.
As a team, the Fighting Hawks came away from the USD Early Bird with two event titles, six top-eight finishes and one improvement on the UND top-10 list. UND also had a performance from a redshirt athlete, competing unattached, which would have qualified for the all-time top-10 chart.
Conny Wohlfahrt stood out on the track, winning the event title in the 800 meters with a time of 2:16.19. She also recorded a third-place finish in the 1,500 meters in a time of 4:38.98.
McKenzie Burian came away with the 5,000-meter crown, winning the event in a time of 17:29.93 and beating everyone by over four seconds.
Allison Lardy took sixth in the shot put with a throw of 44-3 1/4 (13.49m), while
Eve Goldstein, competing unattached, finished eighth with a toss of 44-1 1/2 (13.45m).
Trenton Hanseder placed seventh in the javelin with a personal-best mark of 159-10 1/4 (48.72m).
Greta McLagan crossed the finish line ninth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:39.39, good for the No. 9 time in program history.
Hinewai Knowles and
Malene Kollberg recorded improvements that stood out while competing unattached. Knowles kicked off the day in the prelims of the 100-meter hurdles and clocked a time of 14.79, barely missing out on the finals. Knowles' time would have been good for the No. 9 time in school history. Kollberg ran a time of 25.99 in the 200 meters, which would have barely missed the UND top-10 chart by 0.74 seconds.
North Dakota will now have a weekend off before heading to Azusa, Calif, for the Bryan Clay Invitational on April 13-15.
