UND Begins Season Placing Eight Times at SDSU Holiday Invitational

BROOKINGS, S.D. – The North Dakota track and field program began its 2023-24 indoor season at the SDSU Holiday Classic on Friday. On the opening day of NCAA track and field competition, the Fighting Hawks won an event title, posted two improvements to the UND top-10 lists and placed eight times.

Justice Dick, competing in his first meet since transferring from Kansas, won the lone event title for UND with a time of 1:52.94 in the 800 meters. He not only earned the event crown with that time, but also posted the No. 6 time in school history.

A little over an hour earlier, Brooklyn Brouse was the runner-up in the 600 meters with a time of 1:35.94. With that time, the St. Cloud State transfer now owns the No. 5 time on the UND top-10 list.

Towards the end of the meet, Elle Sondag ran in the women's 3,000 meters and was second with a PR of 10:24.79. Her time beat her previous best by over 14 seconds.

Aleksa Milanovic and Ian Busche, both competing unattached, took the first two spots in the men's 3,000 meters with times of 8:25.00 and 8:29.05, respectively. Cian Nagle, competing in his first meet as a Fighting Hawk, was also in the race and placed sixth with a time of 8:46.51.

Paris Hoverson, Brouse, Ella Hedman and Maggie Dervis were the final North Dakota runners to take the track on Friday night and finished sixth in the 4x400-meter relay, clocking a time of 4:08.04.

Earlier in the day, Jazmin Pullins was the first Fighting Hawk to take the track on Friday and placed eighth in the mile with a time of 5:52.74.

Kenna Curry was the top thrower at the meet for NoDak, finishing as the runner-up in the weight throw with a toss of 63-3 1/4 (19.28m). Towards the end of the meet, Curry also took fifth in the shot put with a mark of 43-6 1/2 (13.27m).

UND will conclude the SDSU Holiday Invitational on Saturday with student-athletes competing in the invitational discus at 11 a.m. A portion of the distance squad will take part in the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener in Boston on Saturday, with events on the track starting at 9 a.m. (CT).
