Box Score GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- The University of North Dakota men's tennis team remained perfect at home and in league play, cruising to a 7-0 win over Oral Roberts on Friday night from Choice Health and Fitness in Grand Forks, N.D.
"I thought the focus and attention to detail from our players was phenomenal tonight," said UND head coach Tom Bosyen. "We came out hungry and eager to compete and it showed. Going up a break in all three doubles sets was huge."
UND (14-2, 2-0 Summit League) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a trio of victories on the doubles courts. The middle pairing of
Cian McDonnell and
Edmond Aynedjian started it off with a 6-2 win before back-to-back 6-4 scores by
Gerhard Sullwald and
Nikita Snezhko on the top court and
Riley Odell and
Drew Van Fossen at the No. 3 spot to cement the strong start for the Fighting Hawks.
The hosts kept up that momentum into singles play, with Snezhko extending the advantage to 2-0 from the fourth position with a 6-4, 6-1 triumph while Sullwald pushed the match to a clinching point by a 6-3, 6-4 score at the top spot.
Odell made it three straight wins by the Hawks in two sets to begin singles play, providing the clinching win with a pair of 6-4 wins at the No. 5 court. Oral Roberts looked to battle back for some points, but Aynedjian bounced back from a defeat in his opening frame to notch a 4-5, 7-5, 10-7 victory from the No. 3 spot to increase the lead to 5-0.
"Momentum can turn so quickly in these matches, so to put five first sets on the board in singles after claiming the doubles point really put us in great shape," said Boysen. "We knew that a team as good as Oral Roberts would make a push and challenge us. The way we responded says a lot about this group of young men."
Jayho Hong cruised to a 6-1 triumph in his first set, but had to rally back for a 10-7 win in the tiebreaker at the bottom court to make it 6-0 for the green and white before McDonnell sealed the shutout victory with another tiebreaker, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to make it a perfect day on the courts for NoDak.
"They fight for each other, they fight to make this season special and they fight to the last point," said Boysen. "This was a great way to end our homestand and leave for our spring break trip with a ton of good vibes."
