GRAND FORKS, N.D. – North Dakota junior defenseman
Abram Wiebe was one of the seven final players named to the 2025 U.S. Collegiate Selects roster that will compete in the 2025 Spengler Cup in December, as announced on Thursday. The announcement completes the 25-man USCS roster that will head to Switzerland.
Wiebe is the second North Dakota defenseman to be named to the roster, joining fellow junior
Jake Livanavage to become the only pair of teammates to share the backend on the USCS team.
The Mission, British Columbia, native has been a stalwart on North Dakota's blue line since arriving in Grand Forks. This season, the Vegas Golden Knights draft pick has played in all 10 games, recording eight points on two goals and six assists, tying for third among NCHC blueliners in scoring. Wiebe has committed just one penalty this season with 10 blocked shots.
Last year, Wiebe was the NCHC Player of the Month for December and a two-time Defenseman of the Week, while racking up 24 points (4g/20a) in 38 games. For his career, the UND assistant captain has 42 points (7g/35a) and is +13 in 88 contests, having never missed a game for North Dakota.
The USCS team was constructed by the coaching staff and organizing committee, with guidance from select NHL scouts, and includes players representing all six conferences. The complete 25-player roster consists of 15 forwards, seven defensemen, and three goaltenders. Nine are from the Big Ten, six are from Hockey East, six are from the NCHC, two are from the CCHA and one representative each come from ECAC Hockey and Atlantic Hockey America.
The Spengler Cup has been held annually in Davos, Switzerland since 1923. It is a six-team invitational tournament traditionally featuring club and national teams from Europe and North America. It is hosted by the Swiss professional team HC Davos each year from Dec. 26-31 at Eisstadion Davos. The University of North Dakota competed in the 1982 Spengler Cup and the University of Minnesota participated in 1981.
The United States Collegiate Selects will face Team Canada to open Spengler Cup play on December 26. Along with the U.S. Selects, host HC Davos, Team Canada, HC Fribourg-Gotteron, Sparta Praha and IFK Helsinki will be taking part in the 2025 tournament. Each team will play a minimum of three contests and maximum of five during the six-day event.
