DELAND, Fla. – Looking to extend its winning streak to match a season-high three matches, the University of North Dakota men's tennis team fell, 7-0, to Stetson on Sunday afternoon in DeLand, Fla.
Â
UND (5-6) drops to 1-1 on its four-match swing in the Sunshine State, and slips below the .500 mark with the defeat. The Fighting Hawks also saw their two-match winning streak come to an end after posting back-to-back 4-3 victories.
Â
In doubles play, Stetson (8-6) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with victories on the bottom two courts, however, the duo of
Nejc Sitar and
Lukas Buth captured a 6-4 triumph from the top position before the Hatters won the points with a 7-5 win on the No. 3 court.
Â
A pair of two-set victories on the No. 3 and 4 courts pushed the advantage to 3-0 for the hosts, and Stetson cemented the match when Sitar was forced to retire at the top spot. Sitar had won the first set, 7-6, and was trailing 5-2 in the second before conceding the match.
Â
The final three matches were all decided in three sets, but UND could not pull out any victories in the trio of battles.
Jake Kuhlman won the first set, 6-4, before dropping the final two sets by identical 6-4 scores on the No. 5 court, Buth also won his first set, 6-3, but fell 7-6 in the second and dropped a tight one 10-8 in the tiebreaker, and
Alex Reinke posted a 6-4 triumph in the opening frame before stumbling in the next two sets in the final match of the day.

North Dakota returns to action on Tuesday with a neutral-site showdown with Samford.
