DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The University of North Dakota men's tennis team cruised to its second straight 4-1 win on Friday morning, this time over Bethune-Cookman in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Â
With the win, UND moves back to the .500 mark at 7-7 with back-to-back wins and ends its five-match road trip in Florida with a 3-2 record heading into conference play next week.
Â
In doubles play, the Fighting Hawks only needed one win on either the two top courts due to Bethune-Cookman surrendering at the third position via walkover.
Lukas Buth and
Nejc Sitar clinched the 1-0 lead for the visitors with a 7-5 triumph on the No. 1 court to push the advantage towards UND.
Â
Due to the Wildcats not having enough players able to fill all six courts, UND was awarded a 2-0 lead due to another walkover victory on the No. 6 court.
Jake Kuhlman extended the advantage to 3-0 with a 6-3, 6-4 win at the fourth position to put the Hawks just one win away from clinching the match.
Â
Bethune-Cookman cut the lead to 3-1 with a win on the No. 2 court, but Johnnie Carmichael sealed the deal with a three-set win. After splitting the first two frames, Carmichael cruised to a 6-1 victory in the tiebreaker to send the Hawks home with the win.
Â
Both Sitar and
Davide Callegari were getting ready to head to a third set when the match was called.
Â
North Dakota returns to Grand Forks next Saturday with a Summit League showdown vs. Illinois State at 5 p.m. from Choice Health and Fitness.
