MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The University of North Dakota traveled to the Coastal Carolina Invitational to begin its 2020 outdoor campaign but quickly learned that it would be its last of the season due to the CDC's social distancing recommendation in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Despite the evolving news throughout the meet, the Fighting Hawks seized its opportunities March 13 and 14 at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium as UND recorded an NCAA leading mark, two meet records, 13 event wins, and 13 new top-10 marks in North Dakota's record book.
UND also showcased its depth and dominance at the Chanteclaires' home track as Fighting Hawks of the present and past recorded top-five sweeps in the women's hammer throw, the women's 200-meters and a top-three sweep in the women's long jump.
Just two weeks after taking silver at The Summit League Championship,
Erin Brown used her record-breaking finish to the indoor career to springboard her 100-meter hurdle season, becoming the first Fighting Hawk to break 14-seconds. Brown crossed the finish line in 13.96 to win the 100-meter hurdles and record the fastest time in the NCAA this season, setting a new North Dakota standard in the process.
Erica Eades and
Destinee Rose-Haas also started their outdoor seasons with record-breaking performances in the 800-meters and the discus throw, respectively. Eades ran a personal-best 2:10.09 set the meet record in the 800-meters and improve her No. 3 time in the UND record book. Rose-Haas hurled the discus 163-11 (49.97) to eclipse the meet record; however, her mark was second to African champion Chiome Onyekwere, who set the stadium record in the event with an Africa-leading throw of 189-6 (57.77m) to move into the top-20 in the world.
Lucy Steinmeyer, The Summit League's 400-meter indoor champion, recorded top-10 times in the 200-meters (24.94) and the 400-meters (56.22) to move into fifth and sixth all-time at UND, respectively, in each of those events.
Aleece Durbin also entered the top-10 in the sprints as she reached eighth all-time in the 100-meter hurdles with a 14.90.
The Fighting Hawks throwers also registered five new top-10 marks as
Cole Beevers (seventh), and
Jacob Hatfield (eighth) hurled new personal-bests to improve their standings in the UND men's hammer throw while Rose-Haas entered the women's hammer throw top-10 with her 177-3 to reach 10th. In the women's discus,
Makala Keefe moved into ninth with her mark of 151-1.
Making his outdoor debut,
Odin Nelson was the top collegiate finisher in the javelin with his toss of 195-3, the fifth-longest toss in UND history. Teammate
Izzy Waite won the women's competition with her mark of 130-6 (39.79m).
Finally, the Fighting Hawks field events enjoyed a formidable start as it swept the long jump (
Cameron McKinney,
Ellie Miller) and triple jump (
Austin Wolf,
Autumn Stokes). UND men also won in the high jump (
Nolan Hovland) and pole vault (
Alex Torp).
Austin Wolf made his top-10 debut in the triple jump with the fourth-best leap in program history at 44-11.75 (13.71m) while
Cameron McKinney made his North Dakota debut in the outdoor long jump and moved into seventh all-time with his first-ever mark over 23-feet at 23-0.75 (7.03m).
Monica Kuehl also made a top-10 debut the triple jump with her distance of 37-1.25 (11.31m).
