UND blanks Florida A&M in doubleheader sweep

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The University of North Dakota softball team used strong pitching and big innings to roll to a pair of shutout victories over Florida A&M on Tuesday evening in Tallahassee, Fla.

The Fighting Hawks needed only two hurlers in the circle to complete the sweep, with Jannay Jones and Adrianna Dilal each throwing a complete-game shutout. The duo combined for eight strikeouts, 11 hits allowed and only surrendered two walks.

UND struck for six runs over the final three innings to break open the first contest of the day for a 6-0 win over the Rattlers. Jones fired her fourth complete game of the season in the win, including her third straight, to move to 3-2 on the campaign. The junior struck out five while limiting the FAMU hitters to just four hits and two walks to lower her ERA to 1.56 on the year.

On the offensive side, the Hawks pounded out 12 hits in the win, led by Chevelle Sartin's three. Her trio of hits were all doubles while also scoring a pair of runs and driving in another. Jocelyn Kirk continued her success from the seventh spot in the order, pounding out a pair of hits, leading the team with two RBIs and coming around to score. Izzy Haslett also finished with a pair of hits and a run scored.

Neither side could get much going in the opening innings, with both pitchers settling into grooves and working out of any jams they found themselves in. North Dakota finally broke through in the top of the fifth when Kirk rocketed a leadoff double into left field before back-to-back ground outs brought her home and produced the first run of the game.

Jones faced the minimum in the bottom of the frame, thanks to a double play started by the junior, to get the visitors right back up to the plate. Sartin led off the top of the sixth with another double, this time to left center, before a fly out moved her to third with one out. Madison Pederson followed with an RBI single to make it 2-0 and Ashlynn Uvila put two in scoring position with another two-bagger. With two outs, Kirk made it three doubles in one inning to bring home two more runs and boost the Hawks to a 4-0 lead after six frames of action.

UND added two more runs in the top of the seventh thanks to an RBI double from Sartin that scored Haslett and a bases loaded walk to Caitlyn Shumaker before Jones shut the door to seal the 6-0 victory.

A four-run inning by the Fighting Hawks once again provided the spark, while pitching shut the door, in a 5-0 win over the Rattlers in the day's finale. Dilal worked around seven hits allowed and avoided the big inning to keep FAMU off the scoreboard while striking out three and not issuing a single free pass.

After an RBI in the first game, Pederson was the lightning rod on offense in the second contest, driving in four of the five runs on a pair of hits while also drawing a walk. Madi Moore also reached base multiple times with a hit and two walks while picking up an RBI and scoring a run.

Dilal escaped a hit in each of the first three innings to keep the game scoreless entering the fourth where UND took advantage with the game's first strike. After a one out walk to Moore, she swiped second and third before Pederson brought her home with an RBI single to put the Hawks in front, 1-0, in a flash. UND nearly extended the advantage in the frame with runners on the corners, but could not do any further damage.

The visitors, however, did do damage in the ensuing inning. A walk and fielder's choice put runners on first and second with two outs before a double steal worked to perfection to immediately place them in scoring position. Another free pass, this time to Sartin, loaded the bases for Moore who drew the third walk of the inning to bring a run home and make it 2-0 UND. Moments later, Pederson broke it open with a bases-clearing double to right center that scored three and exteded the lead to 5-0 after five.

Dilal shut the door over the final three innings, including retiring the side in order in the final frame, to cement the back-to-back shutouts and the sweep.

North Dakota returns to action tomorrow night with a single contest at Alabama State at 6 p.m. Fans can watch the game live on YouTube.
