No. 1 SDSU clips No. 6 UND, 1-0

Fighting Hawks end season with 17-33 mark

FARGO, N.D. – No. 1 seed South Dakota State defeated No. 6 seed North Dakota, 1-0, on Thursday evening in an elimination game from the Summit League Tournament at Tharaldson Park in Fargo, N.D.

UND (17-33) has its season come to an end with the loss while the Jackrabbits (39-6) advance to play the loser of No. 4 seed Kansas City and No. 2 seed Omaha in another elimination game on Friday.

Jannay Jones was fantastic in the circle for the second straight day, but was dealt with a tough loss after pitching a complete game allowing just one run and seven hits. The junior struck out three and held the Jackrabbits to just 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position on the afternoon.

In a similar start to UND's opener against Omaha, neither side could get much going through three innings of play, but South Dakota State mounted the first real threat in the top of the fourth. After the first two runners reached, Jones worked her way out of trouble with a pair of strikeouts and a fly out to keep the game scoreless heading to the bottom of the fourth.

SDSU took advantage in the next inning; however, bringing home the first run of the game after a lead-off double was brought home with a one-out triple to put the Jacks ahead, 1-0.  Jones limited the damage to just a run with a pair of pop outs to keep the Hawks down by one as we moved to the bottom of the fifth.

UND put together a threat in the bottom of the sixth when Jocelyn Kirk led off the inning with a base hit before Alexys Campos reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second with two outs. Madison Pederson hit it hard up the middle, but SDSU made the play to strand the runner and keep the Hawks off the board through six.

North Dakota nearly tied the game in the bottom of the seventh, with Chevelle Sartin reaching after being hit by a pitch and Mariah Peters slapping a single to right field to place runners on first and second with two outs; however, the Hawks could not pick up the crucial hit and fell, 1-0.
