Dilal's gem gives UND 1-0 win in doubleheader split at NDSU

FARGO, N.D.-- Adrianna Dilal threw a complete-game shutout in the opener of a doubleheader split at North Dakota State Sunday at Tharaldson Park in Summit League play. Dilal pitched North Dakota to a 1-0 win in game one before NDSU broke open a scoreless tie in the fourth inning of game two to eventually claim an 8-0 win to salvage a split.

Dilal's shutout was her team-leading third of the season as she improved to 5-6 on the year. She cruised early, quickly erasing a leadoff single in the first before setting down nine straight Bison batters. NDSU (16-24, 11-8 Summit) got runners at the corners in the fourth but she induced one of her dozen flyouts to end the threat.

She stranded runners in each of the final two frames, making UND's lone run hold up. The Fighting Hawks got all the offense they would need in the second inning. Madison Pederson coaxed a walk to leadoff the inning, drawing the free pass after falling behind 0-2. Cassie Castaneda singled two batters later and then Ashlynn Uvila followed to load the bases. With two down, Alexys Campos reached on an error and UND scratched across an unearned run to claim the early lead.

Dilal's final line read seven innings with four hits, three strikeouts and a walk over 88 pitches.

Castaneda and Uvila each had a pair of hits for the Fighting Hawks in the win.

Game two began as another pitchers' duel as the game was scoreless heading to the bottom of the fourth. In that inning, NDSU finally broke through for its first runs of the day, grabbing three before multiple runs in each of the next two innings to claim a six-inning, 8-0 victory.

Jailene Carpio, Pederson and Uvila had the three North Dakota hits in game two.

UND (14-29, 6-12) remains in the final spot for a Summit League Championship berth with four games to play. One win against Kansas City this week would clinch UND's spot in the tournament. The Fighting Hawks host the Roos Friday and Saturday at Apollo Park with doubleheaders each day.
