Hawks Fall 2-0 to Coyotes in Summit League Tournament Pitcher’s Duel

BROOKINGS, S.D. – The North Dakota Softball team fell 2-0 to South Dakota in the opening game of the Summit League tournament Wednesday, wrapping up their season. The Hawks finished with 12 wins, including nine wins in Summit League play—their most in four full seasons in the league. Fifth place was also the highest finish in the league by UND to date.

Jackie Albrecht allowed only three hits on the day, but took the loss for UND as Clara Edwards got the win for South Dakota.

Madi Moore opened the game with a walk and stole second but was unable to come around in the first. Izzy Haslett got the game's first hit in the top of the second, Edwards made a great defensive play as she caught a line shot between her legs and threw to first to get Haslett out.

After Albrecht had pitched two 1-2-3 innings to open the game, South Dakota got both of their runs in the bottom of the third.

In the top of the fourth Katie Joten led off with a double but was thrown out at second after South Dakota centerfielder Courtney Wilson made a great running catch and got the throw to second before Joten could get back.

In the top of the fifth, Baylee Howley got a two out double to get UND back into scoring position but was unable to come around.

In the top of the seventh UND had their best threat at Madison Pederson led off with a single, then Kaycee Hayes came in to pinch run. Mariah Peters followed with a single and then Haslett laid down a perfect sac bunt to get both into scoring position. On the next two plays, a lineout and a groundout ended the game.

UND will return the majority of its roster in 2024, looking to build on the growth this season. The team and athletic department would like to thank all who supported the team in 2023 and look forward to seeing you all again next season.
