Fighting Hawks Drop Two to Sacramento State

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The North Dakota softball team opened the UTEP/NMSU Tournament Friday with a doubleheader against former Big Sky opponent Sacramento State, falling 8-0 in game one and 6-3 in game two.

Game One

Jackie Albrecht got out of a jam in the first inning. After a leadoff single and stolen base, a groundout moved the runner to third, who was caught stealing at home. A two out double presented another threat, but Albrecht finished off the frame with a strikeout.

In the top of the third the Hornets struck with two runs, and then tacked on five more in the top of the fourth. Katie Joten got the first hit of the day for UND with a bunt single in the bottom of the fourth, and Cassie Castaneda followed with a walk but neither made it home with one out and two on.

A solo home run in the top of the sixth made it 8-0 for SSU. Needing a run in the bottom of the sixth to keep the game going, Brooklyn House and Castaneda each got a single but could not cross home to send the game into a seventh inning.

Marissa Bertuccio got the win while Albrecht took the loss.

Game Two

Neither team got a hit in the first inning, and SSU got the first hit of the game in the bottom of the second but Camryn Lasota was able to get out of the inning with zeros still on the board. In the bottom of the third the Hornets struck for five with a three run home run and two run double. Another run in the bottom of the fourth made it 6-0.

In the top of the sixth, Madison Pederson broke up the no-hitter with a single to right, followed by a single up the middle by Joten. Despite the first two batters getting hits, NoDak was unable to get a run across. In the top of the seventh, Castaneda led off with a single to left center, followed by a single by Mariah Peters through the left side and then a single from Johanna Rodriguez up the middle to load the bases. Later with one out, Pederson came up again and singled up the middle to get UND on the board.

Joten followed and was hit by a pitch to bring another run in. Izzy Haslett came in to pinch hit for Hailey Bethune and walked to score a third run. The bases were still loaded with only one out, but the green and white were unable to bring any more across.

Savannah Wahl got the win while Lasota took the loss.

The Fighting Hawks will be back in action tomorrow against UTEP at noon and then Purdue Fort Wayne at 6 p.m.
