Huskies Slip Past Fighting Hawks 3-2 in Pitcher's Duel

HOUSTON – The North Dakota softball team fell in a 3-2 game Thursday that was dominated by pitching. Two RBI singles from Mariah Peters and two runs scored by Katie Joten gave the green and white the lead on two different occasions but NoDak could not hold the lead.

Joten got a leadoff walk to begin the game and then stole second later in the inning. Later Peters hit a single to center to drive Joten in and make it a 1-0 game. Camryn Lasota got a 1-2-3 bottom of the frame, and from there both starting pitchers controlled the game.

Lasota got out of trouble in the second with a strikeout to end the inning with runners on first and second, then during the third and fourth innings both pitchers quieted the opponent's bats with neither allowing a hit.

In the bottom of the fifth, HCU got on the board with a two out triple scoring a runner from second—who walked and had moved to second on a sac bunt.

NoDak took back the lead in the top of the sixth, as Joten was hit by a pitch to start the inning and then stole second. Izzy Haslett moved her to third with a sac bunt and with later with two outs Peters brought Joten in to score with a single to center for the second time in the game. In the bottom of the frame a two run double for HCU gave them back the lead at 3-2, leaving UND with one last chance in the top of the seventh.

Taya Hopfauf reached with a two out single but could not make it in to score.

Katy Janes got the win while Lasota took the loss.

The Fighting Hawks will wrap up this long road trip with a weekend tournament at McNeese State starting on Friday.
