MIAMI – The North Dakota softball team earned a 9-5 victory in the second game against Florida International Saturday, as Johanna Rodriguez slashed for a career best four RBIs and Makaela Carr threw a complete game against her former team. NoDak got the big win to bounce back from a 9-0 loss to FIU earlier in the day.
Game One
Early on the Fighting Hawks found themselves in a 1-0 hole as FIU got a run in the bottom of the first, but UND had a threat to score in the top of the third as Angie Dumlao led off with a double, Katie Joten was hit by a pitch and then both runners advanced on a groundout. Mariah Peters walked to load the bases with two outs but no runs were able to come across.
FIU struck for four in the bottom of the third and then got four more on a grand slam in the sixth.
Alina Varga got the win while Jackie Albrecht took the loss.
Game Two
Carr threw a complete game against her former team, getting her third win of the year.
In the top of the first, UND got an early lead as Rodriguez singled to right to bring in Joten and Peters. FIU answered in the bottom of the frame with two to even up the game. UND struck again in the third as Joten led off with a walk, followed by a single from Kaycee Hayes and Katelyn Neumayer got hit by a pitch to load the bases. Peters came to the plate and singled to bring Joten in and make it 3-2. Rodriguez followed with a single to get her third RBI of the game and make it 4-2. Cassie Castaneda hit a sac fly into foul territory to make it three runs in the inning, then Dumlao followed with a double to bring Peters in for a fourth run in the inning; making it 6-2.
FIU got one run in the fifth and another in the sixth to make it 6-4 heading into the seventh. Peters walked with two outs, and then Rodriguez doubled to left center and Peters came all the way to score from first; making it 7-4. Olivia Dick came in to pinch run for Rodriguez and later when Castaneda reached on an error Dick came in to score and make it 8-4. Dumlao followed with a single to center which brought Taya Hopfauf in to score and make it 9-4. FIU got a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh but Carr finished the game to get the win.
Carr earned the win while Sydney Birling took the loss.
The Fighting Hawks will be back in action tomorrow morning at 8:00 against Seton Hall.
Postgame Notes
· Dumlao got three hits on the day, with one in the first game and two in the second.
· Nine runs in the second game were a season high.
· Hannah Thompson started the second game and picked up a hit.
· Carr tied her season high with four strikeouts in game two.
