MISSOULA, Mont. – The North Dakota softball team grabbed a 5-4 win in game two of the doubleheader against Montana on Friday, led by Camryn Lasota, who threw 3.2 scoreless innings in relief, and Taya Hopfauf, who connected on a three-run homerun. The Grizzlies took the first game of the day 9-1.
Game One
Early on the Fighting Hawks found themselves in a 2-0 hole as the Grizzlies got two runs on a double to right. Leading off the second, Angie Dumlao doubled to left, then advanced to third on a groundout before Hopfauf hit a double to left center that brought Dumlao in to make it 2-1.
The game remained a one-run game until the bottom of the fourth when Montana scored three runs to make it 5-1 and then four in the fifth to end the game.
Rylee Rehbein got the win while Jackie Albrecht took the loss.
Game Two
Lasota pitched 3.2 shutout innings in relief to finish off the game, picking up her second win of the season.
In the top of the first, UND got on the board early as Katie Joten was able to steal home after a bad throw from the catcher to second base that got away into the outfield. In the bottom of the second inning Montana had runners on second and third with two outs but starter Makaela Carr got out of it with a strikeout.
Dumlao led off the third inning with a single to right center field, then later moved up twice on wild pitches. Joten also walked to put two on for Hopfauf, who got all of a pitch low in the strike zone and drove it over the fence in left to make it a 4-0 game. Katelyn Neumayer doubled to right center in the top of the fourth, after advancing on an error was brought in by Dumlao to make it 5-0.
Three RBI doubles in the bottom of the fourth brought in four runs for Montana, bringing it back to a one run game. The Grizzlies threatened in the bottom of the sixth as back-to-back singles and a walk loaded the bases with two outs but Lasota got a groundout to keep UND ahead. Lasota shut the door in the bottom of the seventh with runners on first and second with a two-out strikeout to end the game.
Lasota got the win while Grace Haegele took the loss.
The Fighting Hawks will conclude the three-game set in Missoula tomorrow at 2 p.m.
Postgame Notes
· Dumlao hit 4-6 over the two games and is hitting .327 this season.
· Hopfauf finished with four RBI on the day.
· Lasota got five strikeouts in 3.2 innings of work in game two with no runs allowed.
· Joten now has ten stolen bases this season.
