GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The North Dakota softball team five game win streak ended Saturday as they fell 7-0 and 7-1 to Omaha at Apollo Park.
G1: UNO 7, NoDak 0
With runners on the corners in the first inning, the Mavericks scored first on a softly hit ball to the first baseman that led to an out but plated the runner from third. Later in the inning with a pair of runners on base,
Jackie Albrecht worked her way out of the frame with her first strikeout of the game.
The Mavericks tacked on the first of their three second inning runs on a groundout with runners on second and third. An error by the UND infield plated a second run and would eventually lead to the third run of the inning. UNO took a 5-0 advantage with a leadoff home run in the third.
NoDak found its first baserunner of the game with a leadoff walk in the bottom half of the third, but the Mavericks would retire the next three batters to end the inning.
Camryn Lasota entered the contest in relief midway through the third frame, and after allowing a pair of runs in the fourth, she kept the Mavs off the scoreboard for the final three innings. Lasota worked around a bases loaded jam in the fifth with back-to-back strikeouts, her second straight inning ending with two straights punch outs.
NoDak threatened with runners on the corner in the bottom of the sixth after
Katie Joten was hit by pitch and moved to third on an error by the third baseman. However, a groundout would end the frame scoreless.
Lasota continued her strong pitching performance in the seventh by retiring the side in order and recording her eighth straight out. She struck out four of the eight batters during that stretch. North Dakota, however, was stymied by the Mavericks in the bottom of the inning to close out the game.
G2: UNO 7, NoDak 1
Omaha struck first in game two with a pair of runs in the top of the first off a UND throwing error and a sacrifice fly in the next at-bat. Looking to answer with runs of their own, the Fighting Hawks placed two runners on base with one out in the bottom half of the inning. The Mavericks recorded two straight outs to end the inning, leaving the UND runners stranded on the corners.
Trailing 5-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth,
Izzy Haslett led off the inning with a single to center field for the Hawks and would come around to score after
Mariah Peters laced a ball just over the leaping shortstop's glove.
Omaha added insurance runs in the fifth and seventh innings, while UND tallied one hit over the final three innings.
Makaela Carr pitched a complete game with five strikeouts, while Haslett led the bats with two hits on three plate appearances.
