LINCOLN, Neb. – North Dakota took the early 1-0 lead after securing the doubles point to kick off action, but the Fighting Hawks would go on to drop, 4-1, to Nebraska inside the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon.
The Huskers took a 6-3 win from the top spot in doubles play, defeating
Justin Ilic and
Kotaro Matsumura, but the Hawks responded with the next duo victories.
Leo Galliano and
Walker Valentine added in a 6-3 win of their own from the middle position as
Christos Alex and
Darrshan Suresh Kumar teamed up for another 6-3 win for UND.
With the visitors now ahead 1-0, Nebraska responded with four straight wins in singles competition to clinch the team victory. A 6-1, 6-1 match at the No. 5 court started the run and was followed by a 6-1, 6-4 showing from the sixth position and a 6-2, 6-3 final score from the No. 2 spot. The ending team score of 4-1 was finalized after a three-set, 4-6, 6-0, 6-1 match ended in favor of the Huskers.
Gallino's match at the top spot and Matsumura's No. 3 court-contest went unfinished after the clinching point.
North Dakota men's tennis will head to Minnesota for a pair of matches next weekend, facing Gustavus Adolphus and Morningside in a Saturday doubleheader in St. Peter.
