FARGO, N.D. -- The University of North Dakota track and field teams collected six medals, including a clean event sweep, on the opening day of the 2026 Summit League Outdoor Championships from Fargo, N.D. on Thursday.
Through a trio of completed events in each gender, the UND women currently sit in first place with 57 points while the Fighting Hawk men are fifth with eight points, with both sides having to battle extreme winds.
The biggest highlight of the day came in the women's 10000-meter, as the Hawks went 1-2-3 on the podium to record the clean sweep.
Jadyn Keeler defended her crown with a Summit League and venue record time of 35:03.58 before
Shewaye Johnson also carded a conference and venue record time of 35:16.71 to finish second.
Marie-Louise Jorgensen rounded out the podium with a 36:04.25 while
Naja Weiler (36:13.27) and
Sonja Lindemann (36:43.63) also scored points for the green and white by finishing fifth and seventh, respectively.
Tiffanie Magnusson, who was honored as the Summit League Scholar of the Championships prior to the day starting, earned UND's second title of the day in the women's long jump at 20-01.00 (6.12m) to become only the second UND female to eclipse the 20-foot mark in program history. Magnusson's mark also sits 25th in the Midwest Region and is the best by a Summit League athlete this season.
Marta Marksa also earned podium honors at 19-06.25 (5.95m) to post a personal best and climb to sixth in program history.
The final medal of the day came in the women's hammer throw, as
Julia Matthews went 187-05 (57.14m) in her penultimate throw to finish third and crack the top-10 in program history. Cailey Morton (174-09, 53.28m) and
Kaylynn Red Tomahawk (172-03, 52.50m) also scored for the Hawks in sixth and seventh, respectively.
Eucabeth Kivikangas had a strong opening day in the women's heptathlon and currently sits in first place with 3,173 points through four events. Kivikangas opened by finishing second in the 100-meter hurdles at 14.15 before moving indoors and tying for fourth in the high jump at 5-01.25 (1.56m). She was the only competitor to eclipse 40 feet in the shot put and claimed the event title at 41-01.75 (12.54m) and ended her day with a season-best 25.63 in the 200-meter run to place fourth.
In preliminary action, Marksa (1:00.64) and Kim Hitchen (1:01.46) qualified for the finals in the women's 400-meter hurdles by finishing fourth and and sixth, respectively.
On the men's side, UND picked up points by a pair of competitors in two of the three events.
Lucas Schweigert threw a new personal best in the men's hammer throw at 54.35m (179-03) to place seventh while teammate
Carter Byron finished right behind him in eighth at 53.39m (175-02) to combine for three points.
The men's 10000-meter run saw freshman
Ethan Adams lead the way for UND by finishing sixth at 31:47.05 and
Jonas Weschle also scored for the Hawks in seventh at 31:49.29.
A pair of personal bests pushed
Josh Neil and
Ryan Lange into the finals for the men's 400-meter hurdles, as Neil placed third at 53.35 and Lange finished seventh at 54.02. Neil's time is fourth-best in program history while Lange's mark is ninth all-time.
The championships continue Friday at the Terrence Dahl & Donna Beres Track Complex with the final events of the decathlon and heptathlon scheduled to start at 11 a.m. CT. Field events start at 2 p.m., followed by track events at 4 p.m.
