A former collegiate standout, Tellez (TAY-ez) enters her third season as the pitching coach for the Fighitng Hawks in 2021 following a strong four-year career at New Mexico and DePaul where she emerged as a force behind the plate.
In her first two seasons at North Dakota, Tellez has helped mold a young pitching staff for the Hawks into a strong attack. She has guided Jannay Jones through her first two season of collegiate pitching, earning Summit League preseason awards entering 2020.
In her first two seasons for the Lobos, Tellez started all 105 games and was named the team MVP during her freshman campaign after slashing a .373 average along with five home runs and 26 RBIs. The San Diego, Calif., native smacked seven dingers to go along with 43 RBIs, 11 doubles, 58 hits, and a .369 clip during her final season in Albuquerque.
Tellez transferred to DePaul where she terrorized the BIG EAST Conference during her senior season. Over her final season, Tellez finished third on the team in average (.366), fourth in runs (20), third in hits (48), third in doubles (6), tied for first in round trippers (10), and first in RBI (50). The 50 runs brought home tied for fifth in the DePaul record books for most in a season, and Tellez finished second in the league in slugging percentage (.656). The dominant senior season landed Tellez on the All-BIG EAST First Team, BIG EAST All-Tournament Team, and the conference's player of the week honors in March.
Hear from Coach Stevens on Tellez
"Coach Tellez is a welcomed addition to our staff," said Stevens. "Her playing background along with her having the ability to be fully in charge of a pitching staff at her last stop made her the perfect fit for our program. She is very organized and motivated to succeed and look forward to her work with our battery."
