Dr. Gary Schindler was appointed the University of North Dakota's Faculty Athletics Representative by President Andy Armacost in September 2022.
Dr. Schindler is board-certified by the AmericanBoardof Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS) as an Orthopedic Clinical Specialist (2008) and a Sports Clinical Specialist (2015). He currently serves as the Program Director for UND's Sports Physical Therapy Residency and Faculty Residency Programs.
In additional to his academic leadership, Dr. Schindler serves as Treasurer for the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) North Dakota Component, is a site reviewer for the American Board of Physical Therapy Residency and Fellowship Education (ABPTRFE), and is an Emergency Response for the Athlete instructor through Cognet Steps.
Dr. Schindler also continues his clinical presence as a physical therapist and certified athletic trainer in a private orthopedic practice. His teaching areas include orthopedics, sports medicine, anatomy, and therapeutic agents. His research interests focus on leadership development, sports medicine, orthopedic practice, and anatomy.
A graduate of the University of North Dakota with a bachelor's degree in athletic training. Dr. Schindler earned his Master of Physical Therapy (MPT) from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. He later completed his Transitional Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) at the Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professions before retuning to Grand Forks to earn his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Teaching and Learning from the University if North Dakota.
A native of Red Lake Falls, MN, Dr. Schindler was multi-sport athlete in high school and competed in collegiate basketball at the University of Minnesota Crookston and Rugby Club while attending UND. Dr. Schindler and his wife, Sarah, Reside in Grand Forks and eight children and four grandchildren.
