Day one ends in record breaking style - North Dakota Athletics

GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- The Fighting Sioux swim team started off the Division II National Swimming and Diving meet today in typical UND fashion. The men's 200 medley relay team put themselves at the top of the charts, breaking a 16-year-old record.

The team, comprised of senior Rodrigo Ferreira, junior Pedro Pereira, sophomore Per Westergren, and junior Eric Knight, finished the race with their record setting time of 1:29.86. The previous record was 1:30.27.

Ferreira also excelled in the 50 freestyle finishing in second place with a time of 20.32, .02 seconds behind University of Ashland's Omar Fathallah.

Rounding out the top-eight* finishes for the men's team was freshman Chase Fillingham who placed sixth in the 1,000 freestyle, freshman Daniel Moraes pulled in a seventh place finish in the 200, and Pereira with an eighth place finish in the 50 freestyle.

Freshman Carissa Gormally had the lone top-eight finish for the women in the 50 freestyle with a fourth-place finish.

After day one, the Sioux men's team is situated comfortably in second place and the women are in ninth place, respectively.
