Top-ranked Eagles slip past Sioux, 2-1

GRAND FORKS, N.D.--In a game that saw a combined 18 power play opportunities for both teams, it was Stephen Gionta's shorthanded goal late in the second period that held up as the winner as top-ranked Boston College edged the third-ranked Fighting Sioux 2-1 before a capacity crowd at Ralph Engelstad Arena Saturday night.

With the Sioux down 1-0 and outmanned in the defensive zone, defenseman Nick Fuher fell in the corner, allowing Ryan Murphy to pick up the puck and center to Gionta, who was alone at the goalmouth. UND goalie Jake Brandt (Jr., Roseau, Minn.) slid to his left and robbed Gionta's first attempt, but the BC forward banged his own rebound past a sprawled Brandt.

UND was able to get on the board less than two minutes later when Colby Genoway (Jr., Morden, Man.) deflected a Matt Greene (So., Grand Ledge, Mich.) point shot to make it 2-1 Boston College. That was as close as the Sioux would come, however, as Eagles goalie Matt Kaltiainen stopped all six UND shots in the third period.

Kaltiainen finished with saves, while Brandt stopped 22 shots, including 10 while UND was shorthanded. The Sioux went 0-for-10 on the power play, while the Eagles went 1-for-8.

UND, now 2-1-0 overall, has next weekend off before wrapping up its non-conference schedule Oct. 31-Nov. 1 at home against Yale. The Sioux then open the WCHA schedule Nov. 7-8 at home against Minnesota.
