GRAND FORKS, N.D.--The Fighting Sioux jumped back into the win column and earned the series split with a 2-1 victory over St. Cloud State Saturday night.
Center Rory McMahon's (Jr., Perdue, Sask.) goal at 7:25 of the third period gave the Sioux a 2-0 lead and would ultimately hold up as the game-winning goal. After dishing the puck to linemate Drew Stafford (Fr., Faribault, Minn.) just inside the SCSU blueline, McMahon went to the net and grabbed the rebound from Stafford's shot and put it into a wide-open net for his second goal of the season.
The Huskies pulled to within one while on the power play 2:05 later, when Justin Fletcher converted a Mike Doyle cross-ice pass at 10:30, but SCSU could draw no closer.
The two teams had played a period and a half of scoreless hockey until Zach Parise (Fr., Faribault, Minn.) was credited with his fifth goal of the season after Matt Jones' (Jr., Lisle, Ill.) centering pass bounced off Parise's skate and past SCSU goalie Tim Montgomery.
Jake Brandt (Jr., Roseau, Minn.) was strong in goal once again, stopping 17-of-18 shots. Montgomery took the loss despite 30 saves, including 17 in the second period when the Huskies were outshot 18-4.
Having wrapped up a season-opening 10-game homestand, UND takes to the road next weekend for a two-game set against the Denver Pioneers.
