Women's hockey loses to RPI, 3-1

TROY, N.Y. ? The Fighting Sioux women's hockey team lost to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, 3-1. RPI scored two second period goals to seal the victory. North Dakota falls to 0-1-2 on the season, while RPI improves to 1-1-0.

 

RPI opened up the scoring late in the first period as Whitney Naslund fired one past the UND goalie. Naslund was assisted by teammate Melissa Boik on the play. RPI outshot UND 11-6 in the first period.

 

UND got on the board within the first minute of the second period. Junior forward Randi Motsko (Fairbanks, Alaska) rifled one past RPI goalie, Ashley Mayr, for the power-play goal. Motsko was assisted by sophomore Ashley Lynch (Gilbert Plains, Manitoba) and freshman Stephanie Roy (Grande Digue, New Brunswick).

 

RPI responded with the game-winning goal five minutes later as Kendra Dunlop shot one past UND goalie, Brittany Kirkham (So., Nepean, Ontario). Dunlop was assisted by Nicole McDonald on the play.

 

The Engineers added an insurance goal late in the second period. RPI had a 5-on-3 advantage when Melanie Guillemette scored the unassisted goal.

 

UND was outshot by RPI 33-23. UND was whistled for eight penalties in the contest compared to RPI's five.

 

Goalie Brittany Kirkham saved 30 shots for the Fighting Sioux. Kirkham's season record falls to 0-1-2. RPI goalie Ashley Mayr made 22 saves and improves her season record to 1-1-0.

 

UND and RPI will play again tomorrow at 3 p.m. (CT) at the Houston Field House in Troy N.Y.
