GRAND FORKS, N.D ? In their last dual meet at a Division II school, the Fighting Sioux men's and women's swimming and diving teams defeated St. Cloud State Saturday afternoon at the Hyslop Pool. The men's team finished the day with 166 points to the Huskies 97 while the Fighting Sioux women went finished with 146 points to St. Cloud State's women team with 77.
Leading the way for the Fighting Sioux men was sophomore Daniel Moraes (Salvador, Brazil). Moraes took first place in both the 100 backstroke and 200 freestyle. Moraes was also a member of the first place 400 medley relay along with teammates Anthony Buhr (Jr., Minneapolis, Minn.), Doug Haugen and Adam Rollins (Jr., Irvine, Calif.). Buhr also took first place in the 100 breaststroke while Rollins placed first in the 100 freestyle. In addition, the men's 200 freestyle relay of John Fitzgerald (Jr., Maplewood, Minn.), Eric Knight (Sr., Rochester, Minn.), Shaun Seaburg (Jr., Moorhead, Minn.) and Per Westergren (Jr., Stockholm, Sweden) took top honors at the meet.
Sophomore Carissa Gormally (Williston, N.D.) received two first place finishes on the Fighting Sioux women's side, finishing first in both the 50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke. In addition, Jessica Carlson (So., Woodbury, Minn.) took first place in the 500 and 100 freestyle competitions while Allison Maxwell (So., Williston, N.D.) finished first in the 400 IM. Junior Natalia Busso (Sao Paulo, Brazil) finished first in both the 100 and 200 backstroke at the meet. Busso was also on the first place 400 medley relay team with teammates Caycee Anvik (Jr., Sidney, Mont.), Cathryn DeShaw (So., Stillwater, Minn.) and Kathi DiGregorio (Sr., Burnsville, Minn.).
"We swam very well today" said Fighting Sioux head swimming coach Maviael Sampaio. "We are improving every meet and this was our best meet of the season thus far."
Chris Bancroft (Sr., Anchorage, Alaska) led the way for the Fighting Sioux divers, taking first place in the 3-meter dive and fourth in the 1-meter while teammate Michael Hoenig (Jr., Denver, Colo.) took fourth in the 3-meter and third in the 1-meter dives. On the women's side, Katie Girard (Fr., Lino Lakes, Minn.) took third place in the 1-meter dive while teammate Kate LaRoche (So., Faribault, Minn.) finished fourth. In the 3-meter dive, it was Stephenie Varichak (Fr., Fridley, Minn.) who led the Fighting Sioux, taking third place while Girard finished fourth.
"This was a good meet for us today" said Fighting Sioux head diving coach Brian Strom. "St. Cloud State is one of the top diving teams in the nation. We competed hard against them and look forward to seeing them again at Nationals."
The Fighting Sioux will next be in action Nov. 30 ? Dec. 1 when they will participate in the Falcons Invitational (University of Wisconsin-River Falls) in Minneapolis, Minn.
