Second period dooms women's hockey

VERONA, Wis. -- The Fighting Sioux women's hockey team opened up the WCHA quarterfinals with a loss to Wisconsin, 4-0. Wisconsin scored three second period goals to seal the first game victory.

Wisconsin's Kyla Sanders broke open the scoring with a goal early in the first period. The Badgers would add three more in the second period to take game one in the best-of-three series.

North Dakota goalie, Brittany Kirkham (Fr., Nepean, Ont.) stopped 36 shots in the loss. North Dakota was unable to capitalize on three power-play opportunities. Wisconsin goalie, Jessie Vetter, made 11 saves for her 16th victory of the season.

Wisconsin improves to 30-1-4 overall on the season and North Dakota falls to 3-30-2 on the season. The two teams will meet again tomorrow in a must-win scenario for the Fighting Sioux. Wisconsin can closeout the series with a win tomorrow. Game time is set for 7:37 p.m. and will be played at the Eagle's Nest Arena in Verona, Wis.
