DULUTH, Minn. ? After a scoreless first period, the Bulldogs netted five goals in the second period to propel themselves to the shut out victory. With the victory, UMD moves to 22-3-1 overall and 19-3-0 in the WCHA. UND falls to 4-20-4 overall and 4-16-4 in the WCHA.
UND was whistled for six penalties in the second period, two of which led to power-play goals for the Bulldogs. Minnesota Duluth got goals from Haley Irwin, Iya Gavrilova, Karine Demeule, Elin Holmlov and Laura Fridfinnson. Irwin's and Holmlov's goals were power-play goals.
UND's Brittany Kirkham (So., Nepean, Ontario) was pulled with 8:55 remaining in the second period and replaced by freshman Grace Edgar (Plano, Tex.). Kirkham allowed three goals and stopped 17 shots for the Sioux before being replaced by Edgar. Edgar saved six shots while in net.
Freshman goaltender Michelle Sauer (Aguora, Calif.) started the third period for UND and stopped 17 Bulldog shots.
In the first period, neither team could get on the board as both goalies had a strong period. UND goalie Brittany Kirkham stopped 10 shots to keep the Bulldogs at bay in the first period. Minnesota Duluth's Sara O'Toole broke free for a wide open slap shot, but Kirkham gloved O'Toole's shot for the save.
Offensively, the Sioux had their chances, but Martin made a couple key saves to keep the Sioux off the board. UND's Casie Hanson (Jr., St. Peter, Minn.) had a breakaway opportunity but Hanson's wrist shot was denied by UMD goalie Kim Martin.
UND will return to action on Feb. 2 against Wisconsin in Madison, Wis.
