Vermillion, S.D. - For the second straight day, the University of North Dakota men's swimming team went down to the wire in a dual-meet to pull out a victory, this time defeating South Dakota, 145-135 on Saturday. The Sioux won six individual titles and secured the victory by taking both relays in the event hosted by the Coyotes at the DakotaDome.
"We're really excited to get out to a fast start," UND head coach Steve Parsons said. "It was another close meet for the guys and when we needed someone to step, we got the job done. I felt like we raced a lot better today than we did last night. We finished stronger and that is exciting to see."
Senior Keisuke Yagi (Bunkyo, Japan) picked up huge points for the Sioux by winning both the 100 and 200-meter breaststroke events and swimming the second leg on the victorious 200-meter medley relay, which opened the competition. Yagi posted a time of 1:04.68 to win the 100-meter event and 2:22.85 to take the top spot in the 200-meter race.
Sophomore Nathan Jobe (Fergus Falls, Minn.) anchored both winning relay teams and also captured gold in the 50-meter freestyle (24.74) and took silver in the 100-meter freestyle (54.64) to score 18.50 points for UND. Freshman Dominic Ponce (Loveland, Colo.) won the 200-meter butterfly in 2:19.25, while classmate Ian McKenzie (Norman, Okla.) earned the top spot in the 100-meter fly (1:02.47).
McKenzie edged out teammate Preston Wahl (So., Bismarck, N.D.) to the wall by just .22 of a second (1:02.69). McKenzie was also a part of both winning relays. Freshman George Philbin (Plymouth, Minn.) won the 400-meter freestyle in 4:19.27 to pick up nine points for the Sioux.
The men's team will be back in action on Saturday in another dual meet as the Sioux will take on South Dakota in Vermillion.
