03/19 Fighting Sioux fall in doubleheader with San Diego: A six-run inning in the second game of an evening doubleheader helped the University of San Diego to a 9-1, 8-3 sweep over the University of North Dakota on Thursday at the USD Softball Complex.
It took just six innings for USD to take the first game after taking a 6-0 lead heading into the fifth inning. The teams traded runs in the second game until the Toreros opened up for six runs in the latter half of the fifth stanza to take a 8-3 lead.
Senior Nicole Puerling (Camarillo, Calif.) was .500 (3-for-6) on the day with a home run, a pair of doubles and a run scored. Sophomore Hannah-Rose Peters (Santa Monica, Calif.) led the Sioux with three doubles ? two in the second game ? on 3-of-7 (.429) hitting.
USD was led by Megan Walsh who went 5-for-7 (.714) at the plate with three runs scored, two RBI and a double. Taylor Hensley homered for the Toreros and Celeste Soto tallied a team-high four RBI and two doubles.
Jennifer Ellenbeck was credited with the win for USD in game-one with seven strikeouts and just one run surrendered on four hits. UND's Shelly Wolf (Jr., Lakeville, Minn.) took the loss after 3.1 innings of work.
The game-two victory went to Katie Jo Nelson of USD who came in for relief in the third inning for Kaitlin Healy. Nelson retired six batters and gave up just one run on four hits. Freshman Erica Younan (Chico, Calif.) was handed the loss after she walked six and gave up eight runs on six hits.
NOTING THE SIOUX (2-17)
North Dakota is on a seven-game losing streak after going 1-3 with CSU Bakersfield before falling victim to three-straight sweeps against Point Loma Nazarene (Mar. 16), Cal Baptist (Mar. 18), and San Diego (Mar.19) ... Since reaching California, the Fighting Sioux are 1-9 and are 1-13 in the month of March.
QUICK HITS: Three players are above the .300 for the Fighting Sioux. Sophomore Hannah-Rose Peters (Santa Monica, Calif.) leads with a .352 average, 27 total bases, five doubles and a .435 on base percentage ... ALL-TIME VS. LOYOLA MARYMOUNT
In the all-time series, North Dakota trails Loyola Marymount, 0-3. The first time the two teams met was last year n Los Angeles after former LMU standout Sami Strinz was named the new head coach at UND.
Last year, Loyola Marymount's bats came alive for 28 hits and 22 runs in defeating North Dakota 7-0 and 15-2 in a Saturday (Mar. 8) doubleheader at Smith Field.
The Lions got strong hitting and pitching performances in each contest. Sophomore Melissa Dykema tossed a four-hit shutout in game one while junior Chelsie Tysdal drove in three. In game two, senior Tiffany Pagano threw her third career no-hitter and junior Megan Ackerman homered twice with a career-high seven RBI.
On day two, the Sioux fell to the Lions, 4-0.
NOTING THE LIONS (11-13)
Mired in its longest losing streak since 2002, LMU looks to get back on track with a Saturday doubleheader against North Dakota at noon on Smith Field. The Lions have dropped their last six games, including three by a single run and will be playing their final home series before starting Pacific Coast Softball Conference play next month.
