NAPERVILLE, Ill. ? University of North Dakota freshman Erica Younan has been named the Great West Conference Pitcher of the Week for the week ending March 1, the league office announced today.
Younan, a native of Chico, Calif., threw her first complete game and collected her first collegiate win as the Fighting Sioux defeated Missouri-Kansas City, 5-4, on Saturday afternoon at the Memphis Blues City Classic in Tennessee. She retired a personal-best nine batters and walked just two to lead the way to UND's first victory of the 2009 season and its first as a Division I program.
The win over UMKC was a continuation of Friday's game that was rained out. Due to weather, only two games were played ? the other being a 9-4 Kangaroo victory over Memphis. With its 1-0 record, UND was unofficially announced as the tournament champions.
The Sioux are back in action March 7-8 as they travel to Wichita, Kansas for the Wichita State Shocker Invitational. UND will take on Nebraska at 11 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday and will face the host team at 4 p.m. on Saturday. Action will conclude with a final game against Wichita State on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. All games will be played at the Wilkins Stadium.
