Pursuit of Gold: Training away from the ice

So this week our trainer, Teena Murray, decided to put the team through a three-day challenge of various challenges to get everyones competitive levels up.

The team was split up into three teams, each team having seven players. On day one the team was told to show up at 8 a.m. wearing sweat pants and a hoody.

Not knowing where we were going, we all got into our cars and followed her to a swimming pool. We had three challenges each being worth 25 points.

The first challenge was swimming 14 laps between your seven players. The catch was everyone had to wear their sweatpants and sweatshirt, but only one sweatshirt could be used for each team. Trying to put on a soaking wet sweatshirt in the deep end of a pool is not that easy. Team blue, which was my (Jocelyne) team, won the race by almost two lengths.

In the second challenge we had to do a goofy pick-up and dropoff relay the width of the pool. I still do not know the specifics of the game, but our team won two out of the three tries and took the lead 50-0. The second challenge was raced using the width of the pool. Each team had to complete 16 laps with a 20 KG plate. Because the pool slanted each team standing closest to the shallow end of the pool won. Making it a three way tie.

To break this tie each team had to tread water, with sweatpants and sweatshirts, while the team was linked together. The longest to stay linked and above water would win the tie breaker and win 50 points. Needless to say, team blue too took a clean sweep and ended the day with a 100-0 lead over both teams.

On the second day of challenges our trainer set up a small opstical course in a field of snow. Each person had to weave through tires, step over and under hurdles, and sprint back to the end three times with three different objects (35 KG plate, 35 lb kettle bell, and a 20 lb sandbag). This had to be completed 15 times between each team, with everyone on the team going atleast once. This race was worth 100 points and team blue fnished with a convincing win taking an even bigger lead of 200-0 over both teams.

On the third day of challenges, we found ourselves in the rink parking lot with three stations set up. The first station being the tire flip. The tire had to be flipped on a 50 yard track 20 times (500 total yards). The second station was the sled pull. Three sleds had to be pulled there and back 6 times on a 50 yard track totalling 600 yards each sled. The last station was pushing our equipment manager's truck around the parking lot, with only four people on the team pushing at once. Each first-place time was worth 200 points,  second-place time 100 points, and third-place time 50 points.

With this point system meant that each team had a chance to win the overall competition, but with team blues first-place finish in the tire flip and second place in the sled pull and car push, we solidified our victory 800-550 over team white and 800-250 over team red.
