Fighting Sioux men hold off USD for 158-132 victory

GRAND FORKS, N.D. - The Fighting Sioux men's swimming and diving team picked up a second win over South Dakota on Saturday afternoon. The Sioux defeated the Coyotes 158-132 at the Hyslop Pool.

The Fighting Sioux opened with a 2-3 finish in the 400 medley relay. The UND "A" team of Adam Gannon (Fr., Plymouth, Minn.), Wesley Schultz (Fr., Tehachapi, Calif.), Preston Wahl (Jr., Bismarck, N.D.), Elliot Wilcox (Fr., Hastings, Minn.) clocked in at 3:38.62, followed by the "B" team at 3:41.36.

Gannon picked up an individual title in the 200 free (1:44.56) and registered the team's top time in the 200 IM (1:58.23). Wilcox nabbed a first-place finish of his own winning the 100 free with a time of 48.49 and Schultz registered a pair of second-place finishes, first in the 100 breast (1:02.81) and then in the 200 breast (2:19.36).

The Fighting Sioux went 1-2-3 in both the 1000 free and the 200 fly. Sophomore George Philbin (Plymouth, Minn.) led the way in the 1000 free with a first-place time of 10:10.36. He was followed by Dominic Ponce (10:16.57; So., Loveland, Colo.) and Brandon Hadj (10:33.46; So., Woodbury, Minn.).

In the 200 fly, freshman David Flickinger (Fr., Moorhead, Minn.) led the UND's threesome with a time of 1:58.55. He was followed in suit by Hadj (2:00.07) and Brian Ritchie (2:01.49; So., Homer, Alaska).

Philbin also picked up a win for UND in the 500 free with a time of 4:54.04. Finishing on his heels was Hadj with a time of 4:58.63. Flickinger picked up a second event title winning the 100 fly with a time of 53.65.

Junior Ben Adams (Sitka, Alaska) won the 50 free with a time of 21.83. In the 200 back, freshman Dan Jacobson (Ramsey, Minn.) finished second (2:03.16) and sophomore Clinton Larson (La Plata, N.M.) placed third (2:06.95). Larson was the top finisher for the Sioux in the 100 back with a third-place finish (56.93).

The UND "A" team of Wilcox, Adams, Philbin, and Gannon finished the 400 free relay with a time of 3:11.51.

On the boards, sophomore Richard Eberle (Fort Collins, Colo.) led the Sioux once again against the Coyote. Eberle won the 1-meter with a score of 270.30. Freshman Michael Golling (Moorhead, Minn.) placed third (237.10) and fellow freshman Devin Aune (Mandan, N.D.) finished in fourth (222.00). On the three-meter, Eberle placed second with a score of 256.80). Aune took third with a mark of 241.20 and Golling finished fourth (215.30).

With just three seniors on the 2010-11 squad and all of them female, the Fighting Sioux will celebrate Senior Day on Oct. 30 when the women host Northern Iowa. Events are scheduled to begin at Noon at the Hyslop Pool.
