GRAND FORKS, N.D. --- The UND women's hockey team connected for four
goals in the first period to lead the SIoux to a 6-3 win tonight against the
St. Cloud State Huskies at the Ralph Engelstad Arena.
Jocelyne Lamoureux (Grand Forks, N.D.) had her second hat trick of the
season while Alyssa Wiebe (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) add a pair of goals and
Monique Lamoureux-Kolls (Grand Forks, N.D.) had one.
You don't often walk away from a 6-3 win feeling badly but the Sioux know
they didn't play their best game tonight.
"Overall we are
trying to improve every game," Lamoureux said. "We are disappointed with our
overall defensive effort. We know we can clean it up. It is hard with our short
bench. There is nothing that is going to come easy for us especially with the
numbers we have and the ice time we are getting. I think it is just a matter of
playing smart."
"I don't think there is many 6-3 games you leave fealing disgruntled but you
overall performance but that was definitely the case today," head coach Brian
Idalski said.
The Sioux jumped out to an early lead Lamoureux-Kolls scored
unassisted on the power play only 3:43 into the game. Twelve seconds into the
power play she was able to intercept a pass near the blue line and skate around
a couple Huskies and sneak it through SCSU netminder Ashley Hixon in the
five-hole.
Coming into the game the Sioux felt they didn't want to
overlook the Huskies who are now 0-12-0 on the season, but for a program that
has rarely been in situations when they are hands-down favorites it is still
another learning curve.
SCSU answered at 10:51 of the opening frame when Alex Nelson
beat Dagfinrud on a 2-on-1 which seemed
to spark the offense for the Sioux who scored the next three goals to take a
4-1 lead late into the first period.
Wiebe scored UND's second goal firing a wrist shot top-shelf
on the near side. Lamoureux would follow scoring her first and second of the
game with an even strength and power-play tallies.
Again the Sioux might have been caught sleeping against an
opponent that is winless as SCSU's Callie Dahl found a rebound in front of
Dagfinrud in a scrum in front of the net. The goal was reviewed and upheld.
"We came out got a couple goals, moving the puck and then we
got complacent," Idalski said. "We were terrible in our own end. The goals we
gave up shouldn't happen."
The Huskies connected on the power play for the only goal of
the second period cutting the lead to one heading into the second intermission.
"I don't think we overlooked them but we got that 4-1 lead
and we kind of sat back on our heels and they made it 4-2 right away,"
Lamoureux said. "I think that is a maturity thing and being able to deliver the
knock-out punch making it 5-1. We have got to bear down a little bit and clean
up our d-zone by working a little harder."
In a full family connection, Lamoureux was able to cap off
her second hat trick of the season coming with assists to Madison Kolls
(Hudson, Wis.) and Lamoureux-Kolls.
Wiebe would open the game up with the final goal at 16:16 of
the third frame with the lone assist going to Sara Dagenais (Montreal, Quebec).
It was Wiebe's second of the game and Dagenais' second assist.
"I saw them turn it over and Dagenais had the backhand
attempt and I just turned and got as much on it as I could," Wiebe said. "I
think it went five-hole and trickled in. I didn't really get that much on it
but a goal is a goal.
The Sioux and Huskies will conclude the series tomorrow evening at the Ralph Engelstad Arena with a 7:07 p.m. start.
