Junior Sara Dagenais scored two
goals to help lead the Fighting Sioux to a 6-1 victory and series sweep over
St. Cloud State tonight at the Ralph Engelstad Arena in front of 1,181 fans.
This is the first WCHA series sweep for the
Sioux since doing so on the road against Minnesota in mid-October. Jocelyne
Lamoureux (Grand Forks, N.D.) and Alyssa Wiebe (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) each
tallied two assists and a goal.
With the win the Sioux take over sole
position of first place in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. UND ends
the weekend with 23 points, two ahead of both No. 1 Wisconsin and No. 3 Minnesota
Duluth (21) although both teams have games at-hand on the Sioux.
The Fighting Sioux were successful
on their power play tonight getting goals from Jordan Slavin, Dagenais and
Kelsey Ketcher while skating with the man advantage to a 3-for-9 night.
SCSU's Brittany Toor got the Huskies
on the board late in the third period to deny Stephanie Ney (100 Mile House,
British Columbia) of the shutout.
The Fighting Sioux got off to a
quick start, which is becoming a trend, with a goal within the first six
minutes of the game for the ninth time in 14 games this season. Tonight it was
Dagenais who banged home a pass from Wiebe from behind the net at 4:08 of the
opening frame. UND is now 7-2-1 in games when scoring first.
The Sioux never looked back as Slavin
threaded the needle on the power play for her third goal of the season at 10:10
of the first period, Wiebe added her third of the series and fourth of the year
at 15:05 of the second period and Dagenais and Kelsey Ketcher (Mound, Minn.) picked
up power-play goals to send the Sioux into the second intermission with a 5-0.
Huskies netminder Ashley Nixon was
pulled from the game after allowing the fifth goal in the second period.
In a complete team win, nine
different players collected at least one point and Ney again was solid in net
nearly completing her first shutout of the season. She remains unbeaten on the
year with a 4-0-2 record with a 1.30 goals against average and .946 save
percentage and ranks third in the nation in both categories.
"(Ney) plays a style where you feel pretty
comfortable," Idalski said. "She squares up. You know she's going to stop
the ones she's supposed to. I was disappointed we weren't able to finish that
one for her."
Both Jocelyne Lamoureux and Monique
Lamoureux-Kolls had three-point games combining for one goal and five assists
to continue to lead the team in points with 19 each.
In a physical game, the two teams
combined for 19 penalties and 60 minutes in the box. Each team was called for a
checking from behind penalties including game misconducts.
The five-minute majors played a key
role in the game as UND held the Huskies scoreless on their attempt
(outshooting them 3-2) while the Sioux scored two power-play goals in their
attempt.
The two teams would exchange goals
in the third period to send the Sioux into a Thanksgiving bye week on a role
and looking forward to a battle with top-ranked Wisconsin on Dec. 4-5 at the
Ralph Engelstad Arena.
"Right now, this is great," Dagenais said. "This is a
sweep, and it's huge for us. We're going to have fun tonight, but tomorrow it's
already in the back of our mind that we're getting ready for Wisconsin."
