Upon Further Review No. 7

It was a weekend to remember for Sioux Sports, especially Saturday.

Four teams put it on the line and came up winners.

The Sioux men's hockey team completed a sweep of No. 6 Minnesota Duluth 5-1, the Sioux women's hockey team finished the regular season on a high note with a 1-0 shutout of Minnesota State University, Mankato and both Sioux basketball teams swept Utah Valley at home.

UND also had two basketball players reach the 1,000 point mark for their careers and did it on Parent's Day.

This week home ice advantage will be on the line, playoffs will begin and medals of all kinds will be decided in Vancouver, Vermillion and Houston.

And as a new week dawns there is a very good chance that all four former and current Sioux hockey players could return from the 2010 Winter Olympics with medals.

The Lamoureux sisters are a Monday semifinal win over Sweden away from guaranteeing a medal, while both Team USA's Zach Parise and Team Canada's Jonathan Toews are still in good shape to take home some hardware after Team USA's 5-3 win over Canada Sunday.

Jocelyne Lamoureux has two goals, two assists and a +6 rating through three games while Monique has a goal, six assists and a similar +6 rating.

While passions on both sides of the border are spilling over thanks to Sunday's USA/Canada men's game, clearly both former Fighting Sioux stars were at the top of their game.

Toews had two assists while Parise has his best game of the Olympics with an assist and a +3 rating. Toews leads Team Canada with a +4 rating through the preliminary round.

Hopefully the two can meet up in the gold medal game, assuring both of them of a medal.

Dave Hakstol and the boys put together a third-period performance on Saturday that was reminiscent of many third periods at the Ralph last year when the team seemed invincible.

With a 3-1 lead in tow, the Sioux put a stranglehold on a potent Bulldog offense and never let them get back in the game.

Mario Lamoureux capped off a great weekend for his family by returning from a one-game suspension to score two goals, including a momentum-turning second period goal that gave UND a 3-1 advantage just 50 seconds after Duluth cut the Sioux lead to 2-1.

Sophomore goaltender Brad Eidsness has put together three consecutive top-notch performances that have Sioux fans and coaches thinking that he is playing his best hockey at the best time of the year.

So now it's on to Colorado College where the Sioux can go a long way to securing first round home ice advantage in the WCHA playoffs with a positive weekend.

The Sioux women's team will head into their first round WCHA playoff showdown at Duluth with some positive momentum of their own after a 1-0 win Saturday at Mankato.

The one-goal win was sweet for the Sioux, who have lost seven one-goal decisions and two shoot-outs this season.

Now it's on to Duluth, a team with which the Sioux share a spirited rivalry. UND is still stinging from a tough 4-3 overtime loss to the Bulldogs at the REA just a month ago.

Seniors basketball players Travis Bledsoe and Kayla Bagaason enjoyed once-in-a-lifetime moments on Parent's Weekend at the Betty on Saturday.

Even better is the fact that they both lead their teams to important conference triumphs.

Bledsoe became the 30th men's player and Bagasson the 28th Sioux women's player to surpass the 1,000 point mark for a career.

The Sioux men's basketball team put together one of its best games of the season in defeating Utah Valley 74-58.

The win moved UND into sole possession of third place in the Great West Conference. UND outscored the Wolverines 41-25 in the second half, grabbing an early double-digit lead and never letting Utah Valley back in the game.

The Sioux women's team jumped out to an early lead and then kept an arm-length distance between them and the Wolverines in grabbing their fifth consecutive win 68-57.

UND is in first place in the GWC with a 6-1 mark.

Tuesday afternoon the two teams face important home league tests against New Jersey Institute of Technology.

The doubleheader is an afternoon affair beginning at 12 noon. The games were rescheduled from Feb. 11th when the Highlanders couldn't get to the Dakotas due to a huge east coast snow storm.

The games are being played in the afternoon because of the North Dakota Class B regional basketball tournament.

NJIT is just a half-game behind the Sioux in both the men's and women's standings.

Both teams will then hit the road early Wednesday morning to travel to Chicago and New Jersey to face Chicago State (Thursday) and NJIT (Saturday) on the road.

The Sioux track and field teams will compete for Great West Conference honors as they head to Vermillion for the GWC Indoor Track and Field Championships.

The Sioux swimming and diving teams head to Houston to take part in the Conference USA Swimming and Diving Championships.

And finally, UND's tennis team will make its home debut on Saturday when it hosts old NCC foe St. Cloud State at the Center Court Fitness Club in Grand Forks.
