GRAND FORKS, N.D. - The University of North Dakota athletics department's commitment to academic excellence was reaffirmed today with the release of the NCAA's Academic Progress Report (APR).
During the 2008-09 year, UND's first year of reporting all sports, eight of UND's 20 sports achieved the highest possible APR score of 1,000: men's golf, women's golf, women's basketball, women's cross country, soccer, tennis and volleyball. An additional six sports exceeded the Division I national average for their respective sports: football, men's hockey, men's basketball, softball, women's indoor track and field and women's outdoor track and field.
"Our student-athletes never cease to amaze me," said UND Athletics Director Brian Faison. "The dedication to academics continually shown by our student-athletes and coaches is something our athletics department, University and community are extremely proud of."
Each Division I sports team calculates its APR each academic year, based on the eligibility and retention of each scholarship student-athlete. Teams scoring below 925 out of 1,000 can face penalties, such as scholarship losses and restrictions on practice and competition. Rates are based on the past four years' performance. Teams with only one year of APR data, like UND, are not subject to any penalties.
"I think it's a credit to our student-athletes, coaches and academic administrative staff that we performed so well on a national level," said UND Senior Associate Athletics Director for Internal Operations Daniella Irle. "We are grateful for the support we receive from all campus entities. This is a total University achievement that everyone associated with UND can be proud of."
UND's positive APR results punctuate another outstanding year in the classroom. Three student-athletes earned Academic All-America honors, nine earned Academic All-District honors, eight football players were named to the National Football Foundation Hampshire Honor Society and senior football player Andrew Miller earned a pair of postgraduate scholarships. Additionally, 51 UND student-athletes have earned academic all-conference accolades with some winter and spring teams yet to be announced.
