Fighting Sioux renew rivalry with Mavericks

THIS WEEK: The sixth-ranked Fighting Sioux (7-4-1) return to the Ralph Engelstad Arena this weekend, resuming Western Collegiate Hockey Association play against Minnesota State.

ABOUT MINNESOTA STATE: The Mavericks have opened their season with a 5-7-0 record and 1-5-0 within the conference. Most recently they split a home series Bemidji State with a pair of one-goal games in a 2-1 (ot) win and 1-0 loss.

Leading the Mavericks is second-year head coach Eric Means who has compiled a career record of 20-54-8.

Playing in only eight games, sophomore Kathleen Rogan leads the Mavericks with six goals (6-1-7) while senior Emmi Leinonen (3-6-9) and sophomore Kari Lundberg (4-5-9) are tied for the team lead with nine points.

THE ALL-TIME SERIES: UND is 8-21-5 (.309) all-time against the Mavericks. The two teams split four games last season each winning and losing one game in their home rink.

LAST ACTION: The Fighting Sioux swept the St. Cloud State Huskies at the National Hockey Center.

UND's Olympic line of Jocelyne Lamoureux, Monique Lamoureux-Kolls and Michelle Karvinen combined for 11 of 12 total points in a 6-2 win on Friday. Lamoureux and Karvinen each had two goals and one assist while Lamoureux-Kolls added one goal and two assists. Alyssa Wiebe had the other goal which was unassisted. Stephanie Ney made 22 saves in net for her fifth win of the season.
UND finished off the sweep with a more balanced scoring sheet on Saturday, defeating the Huskies 5-1. Monique Weber and Lamoureux led the way with one goal and two assists each, while Allison Parizek and Candace Molle each added one goal and one assist. Mary Loken also had one goal. Jorid Dagfinrud collected her second win of the season in as many starts.

POLL POSITION: UND is ranked No. 6 in the No. 7 in the USCHO.com/CBS College Sports Women's Hockey Poll.

THE CENTURY CLUB: With Alyssa Wiebe's next point she will become the first player to reach the century club with all of her points as a member of the Fighting Sioux. She currently has scored 40 goals and 59 assists. Both Jocelyne Lamoureux and Monique Lamoureux-Kolls collected their 100th career point during the 2010-11 season, joining Stasia Bakhit as the three players in program history to do so, after transferring to UND.

SHOOTING RANGE: The Fighting Sioux have turned the Ralph Engelstad Arena into a shooting range as they have outshot their opponents 160-73 in four games. They are also undefeated with a 4-0 record at home.

POINT STREAKS: Since getting blanked on the score sheet in the first game of the season at Boston University, Jocelyne Lamoureux and Monique Lamoureux-Kolls have score at least one point in every game since. They each carry 11 game scoring streaks into this weekend and Lamoureux has 11 goals and 19 assists for 30 points and Lamoureux-Kolls has 10 goals and 17 assists for 27 points during that time.

FOUR NATIONS CUP: Jocelyne Lamoureux and Monique Lamoureux Kolls earned gold medals with the U.S. National team at the Four Nations Cup held last week held in Nykoping, Sweden. Lamoureux concluded the tournament tied for second in scoring with eight points (3-4-7) while Lamoureux-Kolls was named the U.S. Player of the Game in the championship against Canada and was tied for fourth in the tournament in scoring with seven points (3-3-6). They also finished first and second in plus/minus rating at +8 and +7, respectively. Michelle Karvinen had one goal and one assist for Finland in the tournament.

In Division I action in Fussen, Germany, Norway went undefeated in four games as Jorid Dagfinrud went 3-0 in three starts and Andrea Dalen contribued one goal and two assists.
