BEMIDJI, Minn. -- Jordan George's power-play goal midway through the second period held up as the winner, and goalie Dan Bakala stopped all 26 shots he faced to carry Bemidji State to a 1-0 win over North Dakota tonight.
It was BSU's first win over UND during its Division I era, and first win over the Sioux since 1970.
George struck at 9:08 of the second period while the Beavers were enjoying a full, 2-minute 5-on-3 power play. Sioux goalie Aaron Dell (Jr., Airdrie, Alberta) stopped an initial blast from BSU defenseman Brad Hunt from the top of the circle, but could not recover in time to stop George, who buried the rebound on the doorstep.
It was the lone puck to get by Dell, who stopped 23 of 24 shots in an another outstanding performance.
At the other end, Dell's counterpart, Bakala, turned away every Sioux attempt in handing UND its third shutout loss of the season.
Bakala made 10 saves while the Beavers were shorthanded, enbaling BSU to kill all six UND power play chances. That included a 5-minute major assessed to defenseman Matt Carlson midway through the third period, during which the Sioux could manage only three shots on goal.
The loss dropped UND to 4-7-1 overall and 2-6-0 in the WCHA, while the Beavers improved to 5-8-1 overall and 3-6-1 in league play.
UND returns home to host WCHA rival Colorado College next Friday and Saturday in the annual Subway Holiday Classic at Ralph Engelstad Arena.
