GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- The University of North Dakota women's hockey team played the Russian Women's National Team to a 3-3 tie on Friday afternoon at Ralph Engelstad Arena.

UND won the shootout afterward, 1-0, as Halli Krzyzaniak was the lone goal scorer in the five-round international-style shootout.

The first time back on the ice after Thanksgiving, UND started the contest looking sluggish. Russia took the lead, scoring at the 13:02 mark of the first period, while outshooting UND 10-4 in the first 20 minutes.

Things started to look better in the second period as UND capitalized on a power play within the first two minutes of the period, to tie the game at 1-1. Sam LaShomb and Josefine Jakobsen worked the puck around in the zone before getting a shot on net. The rebound went right to Becca Kohler who slammed the puck home for the goal.

Unfortunately, Russia would take advantage of a bad turnover in the UND defensive end before the second period came to a close. Tatiana Shibanova intercepted a pass and walked in unopposed for an unassisted goal. Russia still controlled the shots on net, outshooting UND 9-7 in the second period, and 17-13 through 40 minutes of play.

North Dakota finally came out of its slump in the third period, dominating shots on goal, 18-3. However, Shibanova would strike again, giving Russia a 3-1 advantage with less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation. But less than a minute later Layla Marvin scored during a delayed penalty call to bring UND within one and give North Dakota a power play.

In the waning minutes of the game, Russia was assessed for two penalties giving UND a five-on-three power play. UND also opted for the extra attacker with an empty net to go up six on three. With the three-man advantage, Kohler received a back door pass and buried her chance to tie the game at 3-3.

Neither team could score in the ensuing four-on-four overtime and both sides then played in a five-round shootout. Krzyzaniak was the only goal scorer, going high glove on the Russian netminder. Both Andrea Dalen and Layla Marvin hit the post on their attempts.

Shelby Amsley-Benzie was between the pipes for UND, making 17 saves in the exhibition win. Nadezhda Alexandrova made 32 saves for Team Russia.

UND and Team Russia finish the weekend series tomorrow afternoon at 2:07 p.m., back in Ralph Engelstad Arena.
