GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- Bemidji State junior goalie Andrew Walsh stopped 42 of 43 shots as the Beavers and North Dakota battled to a 1-1 overtime tie.
In a game dominated by North Dakota territorially and statistically -- UND led 43-15 in shots on goal and 87-32 in shot attempts -- it was the Beavers' netminder who prevented UND from winning its eighth straight game.
The opening 20 minutes marked arguably UND's finest period of the season, yet Walsh was flawless in stopping all 16 shots he faced as his teammates were outshot 16-4.
It wasn't until sophomore Rocco Grimaldi rocketed a one-timer off a Drake Caggiula centering pass at 6:42 of the second period that UND was able to open the scoring.
The goal was Grimaldi's team-leading eighth of the season and extended his point streak to eight games, matching a career-best.
UND nearly made that 1-0 lead hold through 40 minutes, until BSU scoring leading Cory Ward pounced on a loose puck and beat Zane Gothberg high to the glove side from the faceoff circle with 1:45 left in the second.
Nothing was settled in a third period, despite UND once again holding a lopsided advantage (14-4) on the shots on goal clock.
UND threw five more shots on Walsh in the 5-minutte overtime and hit a pair of goal posts, but could not generate the winner.
The Beavers, who officially had just one shot on goal in the extra frame, also hit the goal post in the final stages of overtime.
Despite the tie, UND remained unbeaten in eight games heading into Saturday night's series finale in Grand Forks.
Gothberg stopped 14 of 15 shots for UND and helped his squad kill all three BSU power plays. However, UND was also held scoreless in three chances with the man advantage.
Saturday's series finale gets underway at 7:07 p.m. at Ralph Engelstad Arnea.
Notes: Walsh, Ward and Grimaldi were named the game's three stars ... Gothberg, who has started all eight games during UND's unbeaten streak, moved into second in the NCHC in goals against average (2.28) ... Grimaldi has a point during every game of the streak, collecting four goals and five assists ... Junior defenseman Nick Mattson played in his 99th career game.
