FARGO, N.D. – Three University of North Dakota student-athletes recorded Big Sky Conference Championship automatic qualifiers today at the Lyle Hokanson Classic, hosted by North Dakota State.
Sprinter Javen Butler won the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.78 seconds. More importantly, his time was the fifth-fastest in the Big Sky Conference this season and was an automatic qualifier for the conference championship.
Sophomore Jimmy Evers qualified in the 110-meter hurdles, running the sixth-best time in the Big Sky this season at 14.69 seconds.
UND's third AQ of the day came courtesy of thrower Keaton Hanevold. The Thompson, N.D., native recorded a javelin throw of 194 feet, 10 inches (59.40 meters). That throw ranked seventh in the Big Sky to date and placed him fourth in today's event.
In addition to the three AQs, UND student-athletes also logged four event titles besides Butler's win in the 100-meters. Tyler Olson won the 200-meters with a time of 22.16 seconds, while Dwight Mandimika finished first in the steeplechase at 9:48.75.
Shawn Johnson finished first in the discus by recording a throw of 163 feet (49.69), besting teammate and runner-up Roman Waldera, whose throw went 158-09 (48.39). Johnson was also the runner-up in the shot put with a mark of 54-03 ¾ (16.55).
Also of note, UND senior Jesse Fenstermacher, who is redshirting, won the 800-meters with a time of 1:52.51.
UND returns to action next weekend with split-squad action at four different meets in California.
