Seniors Johnson, Waldera shine in San Diego

SAN DIEGO -- Senior thrower Shawn Johnson established a personal record in the discus and classmate Roman Waldera performed a season-best mark in the same event Saturday night at the UC San Diego Triton Invitational.

Johnson's PR throw of 178 feet, 3 inches (54.33 meters) moved him up to No. 2 in the Big Sky Conference discus rankings. He previously been ranked No. 3.

Waldera, meanwhile, recorded a throw of 172-02 (52.48) that was his best of the 2014 outdoor season and the fourth-best in the Big Sky this season.

Waldera also competed in the hammer throw, placing first in his flight with a mark of 177-00 (53.94).

Johnson also participated in the shot put. He was seventh in his flight with a throw of 55-02 1/4 (16.82).

UND is back in action next Saturday with split squads competing at the Steve Scott Invitational in Irvine, Calif., and the Ron Masanz Classic in Moorhead, Minn.
