FARGO, N.D. – Junior Tyler Colling matched his own school record in the pole vault today at the NDSU Tune-Up, the University of North Dakota's final competition before next week's Big Sky Conference Outdoor Championship.
Colling cleared 16 feet, ¾ inches (4.90 meters) today to tie the school record he set during the outdoor season opener at UNC Wilmington. The Forest Lake, Minn., native was the runner-up in today's event.
Colling's record-tying performance was one of several standout efforts by UND student-athletes today.
Senior Shawn Johnson won the discus and established a new personal record with a throw of 178 feet, 6 inches (54.42). He also placed third in the shot put at 54-04 ½ (16.57).
Classmate Roman Waldera was the runner-up in the hammer at 170-10 (52.08). More importantly, he recorded a PR in the hammer throw with a heave of 184-08 (56.28). He placed third and was followed closely by teammate Jakob Bissell, who was fourth at 183-07 (55.96).
A pair of UND sophomores stood out in the 110-meter hurdles. Jimmy Evers won the event with a time of 14.80 seconds, while teammate John LeClerc established a PR and moved up to No. 10 in the Big Sky rankings with a time of 14.97.
Sophomore Keaton Hanevold won the javelin today with a throw of 188-033 (57.38). Freshman John Hoplin was the runner-up at 180 even (54.86).
On the track, sophomore Javen Butler captured the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.93 seconds.
UND also received a pair of runner-up efforts from freshmen Tyler Olson and Jared Michel. Olson was second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.12 seconds, narrowly missing the Big Sky qualifying time of 22.10. Michel was the runner-up in the 400-meter hurdles at 55 seconds even.
UND now turns its focus to the 2014 Big Sky Conference Outdoor Championship, scheduled for May 14-17 in Flagstaff, Ariz.
