LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- It seems like University of North Dakota women's track and field team freshman Molli Detloff has needed little time to adjust to collegiate competition.
Detloff, a native of Elk River, Minn., broke the school record in the hammer throw for the second time in her short career so far, as a contingent of throwers competed at the Cal State L.A. Twilight Open on Thursday. She took fourth in the event on her way to setting a new program-best mark, recording a throw of 192 feet, 3 inches (58.61 meters).
Jayd Eggert (Minot, N.D.) was UND's next highest finisher in the hammer, placing seventh and setting a new personal record with a launch of 182-01 (55.50). Seniors Shawny Kramer (Watkins, Minn.) and Samantha Guenther (White Bear Lake, Minn.) took 12th and 13th respectively, with Guenther setting a new personal record at 163-08 (49.89).
Junior Alyssa Lueck (Walworth, Wis.) placed seventh overall in the discus behind a personal-best throw of 154-06 (47.11). Detloff was 10th, reaching a mark of 149-03 (45.51).
UND continues action on the West Coast this weekend with groups competing today at both the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, Calif., and the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, Calif.
