GRAND FORKS, N.D. – UND women's hockey senior goaltender Lexie Shaw and freshman defenseman Abbey Stanley were named the Western Collegiate Hockey Association's Defensive Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week, respectively, the league announced Tuesday.
In net for UND, Shaw made 47 of 49 saves over the weekend to help UND sweep No. 10 Bemidji State. She stopped all 21 shots she faced on Saturday to earn her third shutout of the season in a 2-0 win in Bemidji, Minn. Shaw was also a major part of UND going a perfect 8-for-8 on the penalty kill against the Beavers, as she made a total of 15 saves on the PK over the weekend.
On the blue line, Stanley had a stellar outing as she finished the weekend with a career-high three points, which also tied for the team-high over the weekend. She scored one goal and recorded one assist in the 5-2 win over the Beavers. Stanley then followed up her career-best performance with an assist on the game-winning goal on Saturday to help UND sweep the No. 10 Beavers. She finished the weekend with three blocked shots, two shots on net and a team-high +4 plus/minus rating.
North Dakota has now claimed five of the 15 total player of the week awards that the WCHA has doled out so far this season, including three of the five Rookie of the Week honors.
The Defensive Player of the Week honor is the second of the season for Shaw, while the Rookie of the Week accolade is the first for Stanley. Ryleigh Houston and Emman Nuutinen are the previous Rookie of the Week honorees from North Dakota.
