GRAND FORKS, N.D. – After leading the conference in save percentage, UND women's hockey goaltender Lexie Shaw was named the Defensive Player of the Month for October, the Western Collegiate Hockey Association announced on Thursday.
The senior from Troy, Mich., started in nine games over the course of the month, which also include games played on Sept. 30. Shaw posted three shutouts in that span, including a 21-save effort against national-ranked Bemidji State. She made a season-high 38 saves, conceding just one goal, against No. 1 Wisconsin on Oct. 22. Shaw was also instrumental in helping UND post the nation's second-best penalty-kill percentage at .957 (44-for-46), making a total of 55 saves on the PK over the month.
This is the first monthly honor for Shaw and just the second for UND since the WCHA instituted the award last season. Former goaltender Shelby Amsley-Benzie won the award for December 2015.
North Dakota returns to action on Nov. 12-13, hosting Minnesota Duluth at Ralph Engelstad Arena.
