Eight from UND to skate at World Championship

The IIHF 2016 Women's World Championship begins on Monday, March 28, in Kamloops, British Columbia, and the University of North Dakota will have eight current or former student-athletes participating in the games.

The eight from North Dakota will be representing four teams at the tournament: USA, Canada, Finland and Sweden. The United States' team will include former student-athletes Monique Lamoureux and Jocelyne Lamoureux-Davidson, while Team Canada will feature current defenseman Halli Krzyzaniak.

Former defenseman Johanna Fallman will make her fifth appearance with Team Sweden at the World Championships. The Finnish Women's National Team will feature four current or former UND student-athletes in Anna Kilponen, Vilma Tanskanen, Michelle Karvinen and Susanna Tapani. Additionally, incoming freshman Emma Nuutinen was originally on the Finnish roster, but suffered an injury prior to competition and will not skate in the tournament.

The eight teams competing at the tournament are placed into two groups, with Group A consisting of the U.S., Canada, Finland and Russian; and Group B consisting of Sweden, Switzerland, Japan and the Czech Republic.

After a single round-robin series in each group, the four teams from Group A and the best two teams from Group B advance to the playoff round while the third- and fourth-placed teams in Group B will play a best-of-three relegation round series. The two top-seeded teams from Group A will receive a bye to the semifinals; while quarterfinals will be played between 3A-2B and 4A-1B.

TSN will broadcast live all of Team Canada's and Team USA's games, along with coverage of the playoff-round games. The NHL Network will televise Monday's game between the U.S. and Canada live, but will broadcast the remaining U.S. preliminary games on tape delay. The NHL Network will also cover any U.S. playoff-round games on tape delay, but will broadcast the gold medal game live if the U.S. plays in it.
