GRAND FORKS, N.D. – University of North Dakota juniors Halli Krzyzaniak and Amy Menke became the first UND women's hockey student-athletes to be selected in the National Women's Hockey League's entry draft, being selected 16th and 17th overall, respectively, on Saturday.
Krzyzaniak, a native of Neepawa, Manitoba, was selected in the fourth round by the NWHL defending champions Boston pride. Menke, a native of Shakopee, Minn., was selected in the fifth round by the New York Riveters.
Menke finished her junior season at UND leading the Fighting Hawks with 40 points, stemming from 10 goals and 21 assists. She garnered All-WCHA Second Team honors at the end of the season.
Krzyzaniak led the UND defensemen in scoring with 17 points from five goals and 17 assists. She also skated with the Canadian National Women's Team at the 2015 Four Nations Cup and 2016 IIHF Women's World Championships. Krzyzaniak was named to the All-WCHA Third Team.
All players who have completed their junior seasons at a four-year accredited college were eligible for selection in the draft; all those selected during the draft will complete their senior seasons at the collegiate level before entering the professional ranks. The second NWHL season, which will coincide with the draftees' senior collegiate campaigns, from October 2016 to March 2017. The season includes a preseason, an All-Star weekend and the Isobel Cup playoffs.
